Seeing wonder and excitement through the eyes of a child is truly magical, especially when their joy is about something you love too. Happy, giggling voices, looking at the world as you do but a little differently too. This is Lourmarin through the eyes of a child……………..
“Look we can see across the roof tops! Did you hear the church bells tell the time?”
“Can we go and buy fresh croissants and is the market there today? I want to buy olives and another basket with cherries on it.”
It’s a pretty stroll to the village, we don’t have to hold hands and can even run on ahead without waiting for a grown up.
And at the local café they serve your favorite, citron pressé. And maybe, if you’re really lucky, you can return for dinner and choose exactly what you want because the previous evening, after that long flight, miraculously, no-one minded you having chocolate croissants and French fries for dinner.
Marco the nice owner man, even gave us two croissants, maybe it’s a French thing?
On Friday the market was there, just as we’d remembered it. After buying olives, (and we bought a lot because we love them)
we nibbled on macaroons and then we found a man selling soap. There were so many different colors we didn’t know which one to choose so we bought three different ones each!
We found all sorts of tomatoes to buy, not just red ones, but yellow and green ones too. They tasted delicious.
There was someone selling bows for your hair
and lots of different hats. They even had ones for little people, just like grown ups wear.
It was very useful for the rest of the holiday because we visited lots of places and it was hot!
Back at the market, there were stalls just selling lavender, we liked how it smelled.
And the kind French man let us fill tiny bags with the lavender he’d collected from his lavender fields that week.
Someone bought us some cheese for lunch to eat with a baguette and the tomatoes. It was yummy!
And obviously lots of other people thought the market was good because it was very busy.
We really like Lourmarin. It even has a castle, we both think that’s where fairy princesses used to live.
I liked exploring it. The people there gave me a little worksheet to look for dragons and animals. It reminded me of Belle in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ because lots of people were saying ‘bonjour’ to each other.
The grown ups really liked the wine shop underneath the Château.
It was like going inside a cave.
It was exciting at first, a little dark and a bit cold and it smelled wet but the grown ups wanted to stay in the shop far too long.
There are a lot of fountains in Lourmarin, this was our favorite. We were told it is called Fontaine aux trois Masques. It looked like the stone faces had bubble bath frothing out of their mouths, just like in our bath!
We liked exploring the narrow streets, all the buildings were very tall and they have shutters on the outside of the windows. Our house had shutters too, we think that’s how the rooms stayed cool as it was very hot outside.
Sometimes in the evening when we ate our dinner we listened to people singing, only the singers didn’t know any of the songs we know, like Peppa Pig.
On our last morning I said goodbye looking out across the roof tops. It was sad that we had to go.
We really hope that the grown ups will want to come back and bring us with them. I think they might don’t you?
